03 July 2008 - Stayed in Madrid most of the day. We walked the area to the east of our hotel toward the Paseo de la Castellana and the Plaza Colón.
Bibliotéca Nacional - had a great museum documenting the spanish library system as well as general exhibits on the development of paper, books, printing, etc.
Plaza Colón ... site of much of the Euro2008 celebration ...
Plaza Santa Barbara ... next to our hotel and only a half mile from the Plaza Colón.
Cafe Gijón on the Castellana (photo below) ... opened in 1888. It is famous as a hangout for intellectuals and writers since it opened up. Famous poets and novelists like Federico García Lorca, Antonio Machado, Rubén Darío and Pérez Galdós all have spent time here. You can click herefor some history (in español).
Cruzcampo beer ... continue to try the local beers - this is a good one.
Our friends' (Anne and Oscar) home, in a northern suburb of Madrid ... we rode the Metro up to the northern station (Hospital del Norte), where Oscar picked us up and drove a few more miles to their home. We had a great meal out in the garden and enjoyed the fabulous weather.
