6/18 Culloden, Jacobites, more

18 June 2008 - I visited the Culloden Battlefield, today. It's located just a few miles east of Inverness. There is a newly opened Visitor Center that does a wonderful job interpreting the history and preparing you prior to walking out on the battlefield itself. They also give you an electronic PDA-type GPS driven personal tour guide - you walk to a spot and it automatically starts talking about the area based on your location - very cool! I'll leave it to the historians to interpret the seriousness of the battle and the long lasting impact that it has had on Scotland and the rest of the UK - suffice it to say that the Jacobites did not have a good day. Here are a series of photos from the walk around the area today ...

This line of red flags represent the Hanoverian line against the Jacobites.

Click on the map to see more detail of the battlefield.

There are a series of gravestones for the fallen, sorted by clans.

This is a monument commemorating the 1746 battle.

The perimeter of the battlefield - a strategic cottage, and battle lines in the distance ...

Later in the day, I returned to Inverness where I had a walkabout, enjoying the atmosphere for my last full day. I ate a couple meatpies, and a Galaxy chocolate bar, and saved having another pint until later in the evening - probably at Hootananny's again. Here's a view coming back in to the city - click on the image to see more detail.

Another shot down near the River Ness - the view from the west side looking back across to the many church steeples.

A short video along the river ...

Down on High Street ...

The steps leaving the High Street area - I would take these to get back to Rossmount B&B.

More interesting building architecture and artwork ...
