6/19 Path to Edinburgh / Falkirk

19 June 2008 - I finished up the visit to Inverness in the morning, with a walk around the surrounding neighborhoods. It's really a nice peaceful area, well taken care of. Would definitely be a place to visit again and recommend to others.

In Inverness, a couple views of the street where my B&B was located.

Caught the 10:53 am train to Edinburgh. It was quite a comfortable ride - with nice views of the rural Scottish Highlands - saw a little snow, some rain, and many quaint villages. Arrived in Edinburgh around 2:30 pm, to a windy cool day.

The Inverness train station ...

The trip south crossed this classic bridge, seen here from the Culloden battlefield.

A highland village, Pitlochry, seen along the way.

Some sample English vs Gaelic train station signs ... can you see the similarities between the two languages?

Arrival at Waverly Station in Edinburgh.

Checked in to the Craigmoss B&B on Pilrig Street. I immediately went back to the Waverly Train station, and caught a train west to Falkirk, 25 minutes west of Edinburgh, to see the new Falkirk Wheel. The wheel is a very innovative lock system on the Union canal that connects the east coast with the west coast waterways. I hiked along the canal, 3 miles or so, from the high side to reach the wheel.

The canal path ...

Some interesting foliage along the way.

A view from the tunnel just above the wheel. The channel is directed into the upper lock.

A video of the wheel from the side ...
